Schools OUT for summer

The craziest thing about these pictures are his TEETH!  This guy loves to lose his teeth.  Once it is loose he works on it until he can yank it out.  It's SO different from me who would have it just dangling there for days before it just gently fell out.

The first week of summer has been great.  We are trying to relax and enjoy ourselves.  We have had swimming lessons which is a nice structure to the day and utterly exhausts Emily.  She is trying super hard to swim on her own, she tries hard at lessons.  Nolan is doing great too, his glides are perfect and he can swim, face in, arms out (with lots of splashing).

Dave and I have been golfing a bit and we are taking lessons again with our old buddy Jim.  It is a nice way to spend a Sunday, that's for sure!  We have a few trips planned and Nolan is doing a camp one week of the summer, we are otherwise relaxing and enjoying things.

Emily's Three Year Stats

Emily is perfect.  She is small and light, despite the size of her belly and just perfect.
Height: 37.25 inches (54%)
Weight: 28 lbs, 2 ounces (22%)
BMI: 9%  (well, ok she's little)

She is doing just fine.  Big news, she didn't cry at the doctors office.  This is big news.  She even announced that morning that she would only cry when the doctor checked her ears... but she didn't!

Happy Birthday Emily!

Emily is 3!  Wow, that's so exciting.  We celebrated by going to Magic Wings, the butterfly conservatory.  Emily wore her butterfly clothes which is cute, right?  Butterfly pants and a butterfly shirt.  Adorable.  It's funny, this place just sucks the life out of you.  It hot, humid and there is gentle music playing and you are supposed to move slowly and be quiet...
Once Emily got over being terrified of the butterflies she was curious.  We had a great time, we did a scavenger hunt and looked for pink and purple butterflies (there is one that has a bit of purple on it).
We had lunch at a restaurant.  EVERYONE took a nap and we had pizza and ice cream.

Oh and there were presents!  If she's seen you in the past few days she has told you that she got a bike for her birthday. She's asked to ride it every day.  She's quite good at riding it.  It's fair to say she loves her new bike.
She's also a huge fan of her Elsa and Anna watch.

Eat My Words

There is loads of gross illness going around our town.  Kids are out of school for a week, fever, chills, strep.  And what did I do last week and the week before?  Boast about how my kids haven't been sick all winter.  Yep, I did this.  Damn it.

So this kid comes home from school this week and gets his two blankets and lays down in the living room and falls the heck to sleep.  WHAT?  Who is this kid?  I thought it was funny.  Until I woke him up and told him to go watch tv and after 2 shows called them up for dinner when he fell apart.  Sobbing and crying about how his day was 'too full'... oh crap...
So, as you would suspect, he's sick.  And I've never seen him like this before.  He's always been a kid who powers through his colds.  Who doesn't lay around watching tv.  He is simply too tired to argue and too tired to fight... it's been quite lovely actually.
So while he's been falling asleep every day around 4 at random spots in our house (here he is sleeping in our bed...) and he's laying around, in bed, on couches etc, he's obviously feeling sick because he's not arguing with me about much.  Though I think he's starting to feel a little better because he was yelling at Emily at lunchtime...  Poor thing

Six Year Stats

Sometimes I look at Nolan around other school kids and he looks so teeny.  There are 6th graders that are as tall as I am and when there are masses of kids, it's hard to consider just how tall Nolan is.  Some of his buds are pretty tall too.  And some of his friends are very small.  So it's no surprise that Nolan is at the top of his charts, health wise, for height and weight.  So his 6 year stats are:
Height: 49.5 inches (97%)

Weight: 53 lbs (82%)

Despite his funny (and frustrating) eating, he's growing like a weed and is pretty much perfect.
Nolan with his kindergarten buddies- he towers over some of his pals

Spending Wisely

After a year of collecting from the tooth fairy, doing chores and having a monetary gift for his birthday, Nolan quickly changed from an aggressive saver to a spender!  He asked for us to go to the Wooden Toy and spend his $60.  Of course the morning I agreed to do this I get an email that we can get 20% off of a sale that starts in 2 days... explaining a sale to a stubborn 6-year old ready to spend is a challenge.  So off we went, to the toy store to spend Nolan's money.  As we were getting ready Emily asked if she had any money and whaddya know, she does!  So we packed up her money too and off we went.

Nolan spent a long time looking at legos and games and trucks and figures.  We looked at the science kits and the clearance section and then suddenly and immediately he knew what he wanted.  And when I saw it I completely agreed.  This kid runs around the house pretending to be a ninja so yeah, this is a perfect item to buy.
I also convinced the kids to buy some sticker sets to decorate their rooms.  Nolan bought the Star Wars stickers and Emily chose the princess stickers.  Each had about 30 stickers to put on their walls.  They enjoyed decorating their rooms.
And finally Nolan bought some Star Wars jelly beans.  And he shared them willingly with Emily which was very nice.  All in all he spent about $55.  On our way out he saw a bow and arrow... I convinced him to buy it at a later time since it's an outside toy and we won't be able to use it for a while...  But he also has a $20 in his wallet--- how did he get all of this money?!?!  Goodness me!

The staff at this store was wonderful.  They were patient with him, remarked on his excellent purchases.  They slowly counted back his change and were so unbelievably kind to us.  Nolan and Emily were very polite and respectful which was wonderful.  I was very proud of them, their decisions and their mindfulness of this outing.

Emily was caught snuggling with Thumper a few days ago.  She was rubbing her face back and forth over his face and then sat there with him nestled in her neck.  Oh so darling

Nolan's 6th Birthday Party

Nolan had a soccer birthday party wish is a lot of fun.  It's super easy, kids have plenty of space to run around and get tired.  Last year there were many meltdowns about 45 minutes into the 60 minute party.  This year the meltdowns began much later!
Nolan was super excited to see some of his old buddies!  He was also super excited to be playing soccer!  Check out this action shot!  Look out, Pele!
And Emily was just excited to run!  She probably ran 2 miles or so, for the first 20 minutes she just ran back and forth the length of the field.  She was so happy to be running!  Then the next 20 minutes she ran around dribbling the ball.  Seriously she was amazing, we need to get her a soccer ball!  wow, she was amazing.  And doesn't she look so big here?

After the pizza and before the cake the boys gathered around a vintage pac-man machine and pretended to play it.  They argued over whose turn it was and who would go next.  We never gave them any quarters, they had no idea they weren't actually 'playing' it.  It was hysterical to watch.

Is there anything more precious?

Than a sleeping kid?  Seriously?  I just can't take how sweet this is!

A Day Off

I've gotten myself really involved with the PTO at Nolan's school.  It's exciting, it's soul warming and it's entirely frustrating and a bit overwhelming.  Between the meetings during the day and scrambling to get a sitter for Emily or to pawn her off on friends and the nighttime meetings that either start at 6:30 which feels too early or 8pm which is just so late, I'm BEAT.  I'm just tired of running around. So when I saw that I had a day and night wide open I was super excited!  No classes to go to, no meetings to attend.  No nothing.  And I'm sore from getting back to working out so I opted out of a workout today!  Oh what to do?!!?  Go to the museum, of course!
So Emily and I headed to the Children's Museum.  I'd gone there several times with Nolan and wasn't very impressed but they have done some cleaning and upgrading and it was a fun day out.  Emily and I had a great time, we met up with some friends, we also played together, just us.  It was a fun way to spend the morning.  I can't wait for another day like this!  Oh wait, I think tomorrow is also open...  oh thank goodness!!!

Bring Someone Special Dance

Nolan and I went to the Bring Someone Special Dance at his school last week.  I was super surprised he wanted to go an anticipated millions of meltdowns and breakdowns and tantrums.  He woke up Saturday with a nasty cough which just heightened my expectations.  As the start of the dance approached he started to balk but after some dinner he got dressed in fancy clothes with no arguments, and was excited to go!

So off we went to his school.  We intentionally got there 30 minutes late.  We checked things out, said hi to some friends, took some silly photo booth pictures and then he finally let loose!
This guy had so much fun!  And I had fun too!  We danced, he spun with his dude friends.  He said hi to his non-classroom friends.  He played invisible, no contact pillow fighting (which looked like invisible sword fighting).  He had so much fun!  I'm so happy he asked me to come with him!

Wrap me up

The past two days Emily has asked me to wrap her up in her chair instead of going outside to get Nolan on the bus.  When I come back in she's still sitting like this.  I think it's hysterical!

I'm trying.  I had a bunch of posts to write but I can't figure out how to access my photos!  sigh.  OK, it's possible I figured it out!!!  Goodness!
So it's possible that dave might kill me but I cut emily's hair today.  It was getting long and stringy looking, she wouldn't let us put it up or do much to it. I made an appointment to have my hairdresser cut it and Emily whined and moaned saying she wanted me to do it.  So I did.
And I'm sorry but it doesn't look half bad!  Her hair is so fine and patchy anyway, it's hard to see where or if any mistakes were made.  I think it's cute!

How To Give A Hug

Nolan has been working on How-To books at school.  You know, sequencing and order etc.  I just LOVE the pictures he draws and the stories he think up.  For a while they all ended with 'then I go home' which wasn't so fun.  But he's branched out and occasionally some come home that are just adorable.  This one is called How to give a hug.
First you put arms out

Next you find a person
Last you squeeze
This is in our keepsake box.  Oh my word, I can't stop thinking about how adorable this is.

Turning a Corner? I hope so!!

For anyone with ears, you'd know I've struggled terribly with this guy.  He's stubborn and angry and easily frustrated and a control freak... just like me.  I've had a hard time accepting him for who he is and for how he acts.  But it's possible we are turning a corner.
Maybe he's misunderstood.  Maybe he's just tired.  You know, all of those 'excuses' you make for your child being difficult.  We do it from when they are born: maybe it's a growth spurt, maybe he's teething.  But really, maybe it's just them.  Or maybe it's just me/us.  Who knows, but it's no secret, he is tough.  My mom, who stays for weeks at a go has lamented that he's 'just really difficult'.  That's validating but it also sucks.

So a few days ago Nolan said he was going to start acting like a big kid.  And know what?  He's different!  Like really different!  Like when we tell him to do something, he has been making an effort to do it!  When we tell him to go play for a few minutes while I do x, y or sit in the bathroom waiting for Emily to poop, he will.  He's been great.  Fun.  Not a lot of tantrums.  From either of us.  And that feels awesome.

So I decided to risk it yesterday.  I decided to try to teach him to play a game- UNO.  The last time we tried to play games he threw the game at me because he suspected he was losing (he hadn't even lost yet!!!)  So maybe this was a mistake but know what??  He LOVED it.  And Emily could play too!  It's a teenage mutant ninja turtle uno game which makes the ability to know numbers unnecessary so Emily could play too.  We play open-handed and its fun!  He won a few games yesterday, then he lost some and he didn't freak out!  He didn't cry, he didn't throw anything.  It was really lovely.

So fingers crossed that this didn't jinx us.  I just need to be prepared to play hours worth of UNO for the next few weeks...

Christmas Carrot

On Christmas eve Emily devoured a carrot, intended for a reindeer.  She just grabbed it from the plate and munched on it for the remainder of the evening.
The strange thing is, a month later, she hasn't eaten another carrot.  It's possible we'll need to wait until next Christmas for this to happen again.
Or maybe we should buy carrots more often than once a year...

Winter Get Away

We went on a little winter get-away last weekend, a place called Coco Keys outside of Boston.  We had a great time!  Of course, a few hiccups, as is to be expected when traveling with kids, but overall a great time.
One of the appealing things about this resort was the kid suite.  There were two little beds and their own tv in their section of the room.  This was Emily's first experience with a bed, even though we brought a rail, she got out a zillion times and stayed up later than both nolan and daddy on the second night.
Another appealing thing was donuts for breakfast.  And lots of TV.  The kids really loved eating while sitting on the floor (well, nolan did.  Emily loved the idea of it).  We also had a carpet picnic the first night with our delivered pizza.
The water park was fun!  It was small, which was great for our kids and allowed swimmies which eased our concerns a bit.  It was exciting but not too scary- one slide scared Nolan because it was a long dark tube, at nighttime it was quite dark inside.  But overall it was a fun trip!  With very little sleep.  And lots of being wet!

Friday Night is Movie Night

By Fridays everyone in our house is spent.  Rather than fight the battles to share toys, dry the tears from accidental bumps and bruises and beg/cheat/steal for the kids to stop running around the house- we watch a movie.  Generally Emily doesn't sit for it, she doesn't really seem into movies.  But last week, this is what happened.  And it was blissful.

They each bundled up with their popcorn and I got about 45 minutes of this.  It was awesome.  It was lovely.  I saw a peek into what could be!

We started movie night years ago and it's been one of the best parenting decisions yet.  I love this tradition.

While The Cat Is ...

After we get Nolan on the school bus, Emily comes inside and asks "want to read books in Nolan's bed?" almost every day.  It's adorable.  I love it, sometimes we burrow under covers, sometimes we don't but it's cute.  And Nolan does NOT like that we are in his room/bed when he's not home.  Not one bit.

It makes me think, for a split second, that we should move Emily from her crib to a bed.  I think she'd LOVE a bed.  We'd love a bed to lay in to play or read books etc BUT (and this is a big but-tee hee hee) after all the crap Nolan gave us surrounding bedtime, coming out of his room, refusing to go to his bed, stay in his bed, stay in his room etc, I can't do it.  I just can't choose to move Emily to a bed.

Sure, she MAY stay in her bed.  Sure she MAY be different from Nolan and not give us any bedtime issued (one can pray, right?) but why would we even go there unless it was necessary.  Emily is a climber, but she's not a faller.  So while she likes to perch herself on the top of the crib, she has not yet gone over.  She has not climbed out.

So, it looks like Nolan's just going to have to get over the fact that we lay in his bed and read.  Or cover up our tracks better.  Because we're not moving her to a bed prematurely.  Nope, no way.
