Introducing... Dorothy the Fish

Here she (well, it's actually a boy fish but whatever) is!  Dorothy the fish.  She is Nolan's reward for doing such a great job potty training.  He really is doing so super well!
He is pretty interested in her, he seems upset he can't hold her in his hands but was excited to say goodnight to her tonight and even showed her how a good boy lays in bed, which can sometimes be a difficult task.
She seems happy in her new home.  She lives in his room when he's well behaved.  On a very high shelf.

Video Friday: Potty Rules, In the Voice of Nolan

So here it is.  Here are all the specifics about Nolan's potty experiences.  I think we touched on them all.  He is doing a really super job on the potty.  We are so proud of him!

A few days ago I found Nolan asleep like this.
Really?  I thought maybe he was playing a joke on me so I sat and waited for him to flinch or open his eyes.  He didn't.
How stinking cute does he look?

Mr. Mom

For the past few days while I was taking a class, Dave has been home with Nolan and I've been heading out at 7:30.  While I get home around 4, instead of the dreaded 6pm, I think he got a taste of what our day can be like.  Here Nolan and Dad are playing doctor.  Nolan is taking his blood pressure.
And administering some medicine (said: meninine)
And here they are reading a story after a bath (which they generally do, not just on days where Dave is home)
It was a great class, I feel like I learned some practical stuff.  Dave and Nolan ventured out, sans diaper and Nolan told Dave when he had to use the potty.  I'm so proud of Nolan for how great of a job he has been doing and also very impressed with Dave's courage of going out without the diaper.  I might have stayed home another week or so.  thank you, sweetie.  You're awesome.

Birthday Presents

My birthday was last week.  It was a great day spent hanging with the boys and just relaxing.  Nolan has been really interested in birthdays lately and whenever Dave asked him what they should get me for my birthday Nolan would respond with 'Cars and Trucks'.  (I wanted a kindle).
So on my birthday, what did I get from Nolan?  Yes, you guessed it... Car and Truck. One of each.  This kid was nuts about the presents.  He was more excited then I was!  And I love presents!  He was trying to pull them off the counter and then was jumping up and down doing a jig while I opened my presents.  When he saw the Car and Truck present he went crazy with excitement.  Of course, I shared my present with him (well, not my kindle).

The Down and Dirty

Ok, So I really haven't blogged much about potty training because, well, it's been a heck of a week.  Nolan is doing SO well.  He hasn't had an accident in two (or is it 3) days.  This weekend there were visitors (Nana and Gaga as well as a bunch of friends) and he still was successful despite the (welcome) distraction.
And as nearly every parent will tell you, when your child is learning something new, often some other skill set recedes.  Unfortunately for me, it was his good behavior.  So this week has been really hard on me.  He's doing things specifically when he knows he won't get in trouble.  Like when he's sitting on the potty and he leans over and hits me.  Seemingly out of nowhere.  Or when its time to try again (to sit on the potty) and he runs away, making it a game.  Not a fun one.
We have since moved back to trying every 30 minutes which he's been really great at.  Perhaps trying less often will result in less of the 'game' being played which is frustrating in general as well as worrisome due to the possible mess.  We bring the portable potty and timer when we're outside but really haven't gone anywhere except for the house and yard.  Overall he's done exceptionally well.  We are so overjoyed with his success and the sense of pride he has at this accomplishment.  And today he was a really wonderfully good boy.  Oh how I hope the chips all fall back in line.  This bad behavior is a really awful thing to try to deal with responsibly.

Day At The Farm

Nolan was invited to a birthday party at a farm we've frequented the past two years.  He was excited to hold the baby chicks and to see all the animals.  Except the cows.  He said there weren't any cows at this farm (there were the past two years).
He was quite excited for the baby chicks and we got to hold one.  (for the record, this can be real scary to let your 2 year old hold a baby anything).  And he got to ride on the tractor bikes and bounce in the pumpkin bouncy house.
However, what he was most interested in was riding this pink Barbie bike.
And he became possessive of it.  He rode it for most of the free time we had (rather than feed the goats, pet the animals, etc).
And if he would see someone else going for it he'd run toward it as though it were 'his'.
He had a great time at the party.  Though I'm not certain he knew it was a 'party'.  He might have believe it was merely a bike ride at a farm.  Regardless it was a lovely day.

Potty Training: Day Two

Day one was a little tougher than I imagined.  But we got through it.  Today has been excellent!  I'm so proud of this boy!
So here's how it went.  He picked out his underwear and put them on.  He was so excited it was almost like he didn't know what to do?  That makes two of us!  I set the timer for 15 minutes, he tried. I set it for 5 more minutes, he tried. Repeat, repeat, repeat until SUCCESS!  So I set the timer back to 15 minutes again.  When it went off, after all the cheering, special treats, phone calls etc Nolan looked at me like- 'are you serious?  We have to do this again?  I just went!'  So since it took him about 1 hour to go the first time I pushed back the timer 5 more minutes... I shouldn't have.  So a minor accident and me scooping him up yelling "pee-pee in the potty" we ran to the bathroom where he started crying, screaming and refusing in every way to sit on the potty.  After I got him on the potty we hugged, he calmed down and he peed.  A LOT.  Why don't people tell you that kids pee a real large amount?  I was shocked!  ANYWAY.  After 6 pair of underwear the first day and only one major accident I was thrilled when it was over.  And I was surprised how excited I was looking forward to lunch/aka sleeping diaper on.
Yesterday afternoon and today have been super so far.  He's tried every time he heard the timer go off.  He is only on his second underwear which is fantastic!  And he was successful 7 times this morning.  SEVEN.  Which means he's going often.  I wonder if this will eventually spread out so we can, you know, leave the house?!

At any rate, I am SO super proud of him.  This is hard work and he's doing a really super job!

Time is Ticking: Potty Training Eve

Today is the day before we officially 'begin' potty training.  We've cleared the calendar (except for a trip to the doctor for his 2.5 year checkup) and we've got lots of juice, special treats and yes, you guessed it, underwear.
This kid loves his underwear.  He helped fold it and put it away.  I'm afraid to think of the difficult decision he'll have when he gets to pick which of his 24 pair he wants to wear first.
I foresee my biggest struggle tomorrow and the days to follow to be getting him OFF the potty if he doesn't produce.  We're going for the time-set approach- every 20 minutes or so go try.  I was hoping to set a timer for how long he can try for too.  We'll see.  Also a goal is to load him up with liquid so he goes a lot.
So for all friends and family, keep your cell phones on!  Hopefully he'll be calling you soon to brag about his success!  Wish me (er, I mean us) luck!
Dear Potty Fairy:  Please make this a lot easier than I envision it being.

Rest In Peace, Gram

My Gram, oh she was SO not a 'Grandma' passed away this morning after a terminal illness.  She was such a remarkable woman who lived a full and exciting life filled with lots of children, adventure and fun.
She was a woman I really got to know as a grown up, she lived so far away when we were children.  I didn't get to see her very often.  I was fortunate that my job took me to Toronto several times over the course of several years.  I got to re-introduce myself to her and to experience her as many grandchildren do not get to experience their Grandparents.  I feel really fortunate to have had such a special relationship with her.
She was always busy.  She played bridge, had an avid bookclub (and sometimes we were reading the same books which made for our visits even more fun), met up at the Senior Center or drove her friends who no longer drove.  (She was a fast driver, making even me nervous in the car.  Not the old lady doing 15 down the street, but flying up to stop signs and slamming the breaks- probably not the safest but it seemed to fit her personality).  She was a spitfire, never to hold back her honest opinion and rarely to waiver when making a decision.  I admire her for the woman she was.
How lucky I feel that she got to meet Nolan a few years ago.  There are some very cute pictures of the two of them just taking each other in.  Just last week I was asking her how she ever got through the terrible twos with all of her children.  She just laughed.  What a delightful sound.
She was such an awesome lady.   She was firm, loving and spicy all at the same time.
Rest In Peace, Gram.  You will be missed.

Video Friday: Who's Excited?

Who's excited about his new underwear?  Yep, this kid is.  He was so excited, he piled them all on each other, then picked them all up and tossed them in the air.  Then went through them each again, getting more and more excited who was on them (Thomas, cars or Mickey Mouse) and then started 'juggling' them.  So we're starting potty training next week.  I'm terrified but know I need to do this eventually and we think he's ready.  Let's hope so!  As of now we have a hard time getting him off the potty if he doesn't... produce.  So that might be a good sign too.  I expect to spend basically all of next week in the bathroom.  Any tips?  Please send along to me!

Hide & Seek

This is Nolan's (and Dave's) preferred hiding spot.  Can you find him?
Yeah, it can be tricky.  But if you listen closely you can hear him giggling.
Oh what a fun game!

A card

A few days ago Nolan made a birthday card for his little friend.  The intense concentration he afforded to this task was precious.  Each sticker was carefully placed on the paper.  Each mark was well thought out and drawn.
I've never really seen Nolan concentrate so hard on something.  It was really cool to watch him dedicate himself and his creativity to this task.  I can't wait for the next birthday to watch this in action again.
How proud does he look?

Boy Approved

Dave and I are hoping to make our living room more used.  We agreed that while the leather couch we had was lovely it wasn't very easy or comfortable to sit in.  We wanted to get a sofa/loveseat set and try to make the room a bit cozier.  A room that we'd want to sit in.
So the day they arrived Mr. NoNo here was very happy.  Why?  Oh well the pillows have a fringe on them.  So what did he do?  Discarded his shirt for easier access...
And rubbed them all over his belly.  Yes, these couches are Nolan approved.  When he is fully clothed he'll rub the fringe on his cheek or neck.  LOVES the pillows.
We're still waiting on the rug and removal of the couch to make the room really our 'own'.  Oh and we need some more lighting in there.  But all in all we are very happy with the new couches.  Let's hope we sit in this room more often now!

Boy and BoBo in a Box

Here is the boy and his monkey, Bobo, in a box.
Here they are chumming it up, what a nice friend.
(this is the best!)  Here Nolan is making Bobo smile.  Yep, he's squeezing his mouth together in a smile.
 Here's another shot.
Sorry for the lack of video on Video Friday.  It's been a trying week!  Hope to have some for next week!

Big Boy

Look at this big boy.  (ok, and check out that humongous zucchini)!
He's kinda awesome.  Although we are encountering some really frustrating issues, many say are the 'terrible twos' which can make times much more challenging.
Today has been a good day which helps me look at these photos and say, 'what a good boy'
How did he get so big? He looks like a small person, not a baby.  wow.  crazy.

Big Weekend

Guess what this weekend was the start to???  Yes, you guessed it.  Notre Dame Football started this weekend.  9am on Saturday.  Look at this big boy all geared up for the game.
We made special 'football for the morning' food which was scones and breakfast pizza.
Here's Nolan helping snip the basil for the top of the pizza.  What a helper.
Go Irish!
