Day Three

There's not a whole lot new to report. Nolan and I had another pretty uneventful day. We went to BJ's in the morning as our big outing for the day. I made Nolan a mixture of orzo, brocoli, and olives for lunch that he seemed to like but managed to get all over the place. He's kind of a weird eater; he likes just about everything but is very unpredictable as to what he will want at any given meal. That said, he's been really into olives for the last several weeks. I'm not even sure how that all started but it seems like a very weird food for a baby to like.

One thing I've definitely realized is that I'm looking forward to spring weather. It will be nice to be able to take Nolan for walks or to the park again. Our options for entertaining him just seem so limited in the winter.

Colleen is back tomorrow. It sounds like it was a great wedding and I think she enjoyed some time to herself. We miss her and will be very happy to see her.

Day Two

Since I skipped Video Friday, here is one of Nolan being a goofball in the bathtub.

Day Two of Man Weekend was pretty successful. We went out for wings, hit the batting cages, and reviewed lawn maintenance. Well, not really. We went to the grocery store where Nolan charmed all the old ladies and spent most of the day playing in the basement in the nest of pillows and blankets that Nolan has been building lately. He did a bit more walking and gave me lots of hugs, which really made me overlook all the spoon-dropping that went on during meal times.

We miss Colleen and hope she's having a great time and some well-deserved alone-time.

Since the video is of the bath, here's a picture of one of Nolan's post-bath rituals. He likes to brush his hair but, as with most things, he really likes to put the brush in his mouth.

Live Update from Man Weekend 2011

As you may have heard, Colleen is off to Texas for a wedding this weekend. This, of course, leaves both this blog and our son in my capable hands.

I guess I should say from the start that I do not at all underestimate the difficulty of caring for Nolan on a daily basis. I try to pull my weight before/after work and on the weekends. Even though I'm not truly alone during most of those times, it can still be exhausting. So while I think I know what I'm in for, I will surely learn little things that Colleen deals with every day (like how hard it is to get out of the house on time without feeling like you've forgetten all kinds of essential items).

I should also say that Colleen does an amazing job with our little boy. As you can probably tell from all of the pictures, videos, and anecdotes on this blog, we have one happy, healthy, smart, all-around good baby. Colleen deserves the credit for this, as she takes her job very seriously and gives Nolan her best every day.

Anyhow, Day One of Man Weekend went really well. Nolan napped like a champ this morning, showed off his walking at Library Class, and was a trooper for our road trip to Massachusetts to visit baby AJ. He also got to hang around with Nana, Grampa, Auntie Barbara, and Uncle Fred where he did even more walking and impressed everyone with his ball-passing skills.

Now we are home and tired. Colleen showed me how to load pictures and videos so I'll try to do a bit of that with tomorrow's update.

Bye Bye Mommy!

Dave will be blogging for the weekend as I am off on a trip to Texas. I'm not sure why but I just love these photos of Nolan. I love the shirt he's wearing too- it's a paper airplane and on the back gives directions how to make one. So cute.
And it looks like he's waving here. Or roaring like a lion with his paw up. Either way, I love this.

Monday

On Monday, Dave was home and we went to the Children's Museum (with Nolan). While much of the museum was geared toward children who are older and/or walking, there were a few exhibits that Nolan thought were really cool. The floating balls and the bubbles were probably his favorite. Well, he was especially fond of the bunnies too. I'm not sure if Nolan was excited that Dad was home or that he was going somewhere new but Nolan opted out of BOTH his naps on Monday and survived by taking a 20 minute nap in the car. Thankfully his naps are back to regular.

New Shoes

For Christmas Nolan got a pair of Converse from his Dad. They are a tad big and surprisingly heavy. I put them on him one day just to see how they'd look and what they'd feel like. Nolan thought they were REALLY funny.

Congratulations to Sus & Geoff and the arrival of their son Alexander James, born on February 21, 2011, one day early. Nolan is thrilled to be a big cousin!

Big Sleeping Boy

Here is our big boy. He seems to love his bed. When he isn't sleeping in it, he's chewing on it... look at all the teethmarks. But seriously, I can't believe how big he is! He used to fit sideways in his crib, now he takes up so much of it, it's just amazing how he's grown!
It has been taking longer for him to fall asleep but he's sleeping more soundly. I am sad to report a feeling that his morning nap will be 'going away' soon. What a bummer.

Confession

Nolan watches tv. We have a classic Sesame Street DVD (with all the favorites- C is for cookie and I love trash). And it's fun to watch! He's a big fan of Elmo and Cookie Monster and I must admit, I am finding myself enjoying those two especially also.
We only watch a few minutes at a time. We watch it together and snuggle, often when he's tired or really cranky. And come on, look how much he loves it! He points and laughs and giggles.
I can see why kids watch a lot of tv. Because they LOVE it.

While he only gets a few minutes here and a few minutes there, it is a great tool to get him to change his mind about bee-lining to the stairs or cranking about seemingly nothing.

I love Thursdays

I love Thursdays. Actually, I love Wednesdays too. Wednesday we go to a music class which is really fun and I LOVE that it's on Wednesday. It's the middle of the week and I love it and I think Nolan likes it. But Thursdays are really awesome. We don't have any set plans in the morning and in the afternoons we get together with a group of moms and their children that I've met from all different parts of my parenting-world.They all have babies about Nolan's age and it's so fun to see them develop and it is a wonderful resource for your baby questions. It's also awesome because we all know some days are good and other days are tough. We can tell by looking at each other who needs an extra hand with their kid. They understand that sometimes plans fall through, sometimes naps take precedent and sometimes it's time to eat. It seems like it's always time for someone to eat. It's also a wonderful group of women. I feel especially lucky to know each one of them.
Every Thursday we have plans to get together and do something- either play at someone's house or go somewhere. I love that it's our Thursday activity. I love that it's on Thursday. Because after we've come home and sorted out dinner and whatever else we have to, then it's FRIDAY! And Friday feels really close to the weekend when Dave is home and I get to watch Nolan and Dave be together again- one of my favorite things about the weekend. Until the weekend, I'll just continue to try to amuse Nolan. This week it seems to be my mouth and pickles. Yep, this kid ate not only my pickle at lunch but someone else's too! He had a very Mediterranean lunch- crackers, pickles, olives, cheese and carrots. Well, and O's. Lots of O's.

Puzzles

While he can't figure out the puzzle, he apparently has figured out associations... yes, the milk goes with the cow. well, ok, not quite. He doesn't 'do' the puzzle, he mostly chews on the pieces, he LOVES the duck piece. I find it funny that all of these animals can also be food... I love this shirt he's wearing. Unfortunatley it's a wee bit too small for him so it's been moved to the 'i'm too big for this stuff' box. Too bad, he's so stinking cute in it.

Growing up

This week has been strange already. Oh, it's only Tuesday? Darn. Nolan has begun to have tantrums- leg kicking, head flailing tantrums. And while I find them somewhat humorous I'm also not sure what I should be doing as a parent. so I just watch. Oh and he suddenly has opinions- like which book he wants to read- god forbid you take the wrong book off the shelf that he's pointing to and he'll be sure to let you know. And while he's still very very active, he's also become quite determined to do things- like read books or put an object in another object, put things on his head or play with a toy. During the determination phase he acts as though no one else is nearby, he's so focused on the task. It's fun showing him how things work or watching him try to do it or figure it out but can be exhausting...
sometimes he'll just lay down on the floor for 2-3 seconds and then bounce back up again for more playing. So at least there is a little bit of downtime. I look forward to the days when I can do something while he is playing. I see a glimpse of that and it's exciting.
He hasn't taken any more steps since Saturday...

Very Big Day

Yesterday was a very big day. Not only did Nolan spend some really great time with Nana and Grampa but he also had a major milestone. He took his first steps! Yes, this guy was a champion stander yesterday and took a few steps. How very exciting.

He also did some great learning. It was FASCINATING to watch him figure out how to get so he is sitting on his Hank the Hauler truck. Once he figured it out he did it about 5 or so more times- get on and get off, almost as though he was trying to make sure he remembered how he did it. It was really wonderful to witness.
And after all of that activity, he was tired. TIRED. So he snuggled up with Dad, even got into the sleeping position- not for long. What a goof.

Snack and a Chat

Yesterday Nolan has a really really weird day. That is until 2pm when he woke up. Lately his naps are all over the place and yesterday he refused to drink from the bottle so after his early wake up I offered him a snack and a chat.

While skyping with the Grandparents Nolan had a few crackers and something to drink (thank goodness). He had a great time showing off some of his skills while looking like the etrade baby. It was the first skype chat with my parents in a while that he wasn't wiggling and banging on the keyboard.

We'll try this approach again! Thanks for the chat Gramma and Grampa Jack!

One Month Shy

Of a year old. It's hard to believe that this big boy is almost one! I've been thinking back to when he was born a lot lately. I can remember almost every moment of the process of having him. It's amazing to me that this life has lived within me and now he's his own person! He's got a personality- his own thoughts and goals. He is happy, gets frustrated, has wants and can express them.
He is learning to communicate with sign language and with pointing and grunting. He's discovering correlation between certain things/events- like sitting in the high chair means eating.

One of my favorite things to do is to watch Dave and Nolan interact. They have so much fun together and you can tell that they just love being together. I'm in awe of how amazing of a father Dave is to Nolan.

Even when times are tough, even when life is really challenging, I am reminded how truly blessed I am when I look at my family.

Got it!

Here are some photos of Nolan sock-less but not immune to the cold. As you can see, he can move two feet to the right and be on carpet, not the cold tile, but he moves to the tile and then lifts his foot off. Or just scrunches up the toes indicating it's cold.

I'll be really sad when he grows out of this shirt, it's so funny, a thermal hoodie with a t shirt over it. He looks like a mini teenager... well, except for the Elmo on the shirt.

Happy Boy

This weekend was really fantastic. We didn't do much, we chilled out mostly, we relaxed and enjoyed ourselves. It was so nice to do that.

His New Crib

And I don't mean crib as in the show 'cribs' I mean he has a new place to sleep. We decided to get him a new crib and he loves it! LOVES.IT.

When it was first put together we put him in there so we could do some clean up. He was horsing around in there and acting like a regular clown. I was worried he'd fail to nap since it was new and exciting but he was a champ.

When he woke up from his nap he pointed to get put back in, then ran his hand across the mattress (as though to say 'this is sweet') then laid down flat on his face/belly and just smiled. I think he likes it.

Nolan's Snow Day

Yesterday we stayed in. It was a snow day and the whole family was home. That means we brew a big pot of coffee and hang out in our fleece pants. Our little guy thought he needed some coffee (he doesn't) and he looks so cute drinking from the big coffee mug. I wish it still had the Starbucks Logo on it, I would send it to them as a 'start 'em early' campaign. I guess Nolan was feeling like his morning drink motivated him to do some sun salutations to start the day. So he rolled out the mat, touched every single leave on the mat, crawled back and forth on the mat like an angry tiger and then began his yoga practice.
This is a very advanced move called downward baby corkscrew. I bet his arms and shoulders will be sore today after holding this move.

So after some coffee and yoga, our little friend slept great yesterday. Maybe the kid needs more zen in his morning.

Yikes!

Yeah, it's nasty out there. Or so the weather people tell us. Our doors are frozen shut and we can't see out our windows. Well, not really about the doors but it's gross.
So what makes it even weirder is Nolan keeps pulling his socks off. My feet are cold with my socks on! But he yanks them off every chance he gets. But he's not immune to the cold. As he crawls through the kitchen on the cold tile he does this...
Notice his feet are not on the floor. If he stops and sits on his bottom he picks both his feet up and holds them up so they don't have to touch the tile. Unfortunately I can't get a photo of it but it's really funny.

Tomorrow we'll talk about what a snow day is for Nolan and how he gets through the day...

Giving a Lift to a Pal

Nolan and Rupert (the bear) and I had a snow day. We spent most of the day pushing our friends around the basement
This is a new approach but he loves pushing Thomas the Train and Hank the Hauler around. He also loves Rupert the bear so this was a great day for his favorite toys.

Although he was confused exactly HOW Rupert got in the truck like he was, he eventually got comfortable with is and just 'went' with it.

And based on how many laps we did, Rupert is a well traveled bear.
