Happy Anniversary Sweetie!

Three years ago today Dave and I got married. Our wedding was amazingly beautiful, the setting was glorious and the party was an all nigher and all of our wishes came true. What an amazing 3 years.
Dave, I love spending every day together and cherish my life with you. I never knew life could be this rich and never imagined I could love someone as much as I love you. Thank you for making my life so full of happiness.

Why didn't he get THAT trait from Dave?

Nolan doesn't like to sleep. It's weird, especially since Dave REALLY loves to sleep. But Mr. Nolan, every time he starts to get tired we try to get him to fall asleep he fights it, wails, cries, whines etc. Last night in an effort to get him to sleep Dave and Nolan got so sweaty it was gross. Seriously Nolan, just close your eyes and GO TO SLEEP.

Although we might be taking steps closer to something good. This weekend he fell alseep (in my arms in an empty room bouncing and singing) at a party. Yesterday he fell asleep in a restaurant and today while rocking in his car seat waiting to go out. These are great strides since they did not involve screaming and wailing before the eye-closing.

Why does he fight it so?

Well Read

One of the neatest things someone said about unborn Nolan was the prediction he'd be a well read baby, since both his parents enjoy reading so much. I admit, many days we don't read to him but I recently pulled out a bunch of his books and he seems to LOVE this one. It's a book of baby faces. The faces are about the size of his little face and he's most interested in this book.
Maybe he is just trying to get it in his mouth, but it's still really fun to watch!

Summer Fun

Yesterday Nolan had his first swim! It's a wee little pool but he's a wee little guy. He was super proud of himself in his new swimming outfit. He didn't love the pool at first but then he saw his second favorite thing- his foot! I don't think he realizes he has two, he really loves just one of them. But he hung onto that foot for dear life the whole time he was in the pool. He swam for about 10 minutes, then got out, had a snack and a nap.
Seriously, this kid has a pretty sweet life!

New things

It's been a while since I've WRITTEN much about Nolan. I've posted photos but we've been busy. Lately Nolan has been into new things. He's been really into the dangling toys from his play mat, he hangs onto them, tries to get them in his mouth, rolls on his side to get the ones that are not hanging but laying on the mat. He's really into putting EVERYTHING in his mouth. He can fit 8 fingers, many of his toys, straps from whatever he's sitting in, stuffed animals, burp cloths, blankets, our fingers etc. But he is unfortunately (or fortunately) no longer into the pacifier. This is great since we won't need to fight with him to be done with the pacifier except when he's screaming in public we no longer have a sure-thing fix.

He's also moved into his 3-6 month clothes. Some of his 0-3 still fit but they are getting snug - or we have trouble getting them over his big dome. This is as exciting as switching from a warm weather to cold weather wardrobe- endless possibilities! So fun since Nolan's cousins have given him tons of hand-me-downs so we have lots of old and new stuff.

He's also into songs lately! This, unfortunately for anyone who can hear, is the new thing that calms him down. There is a song in particular that he really loves and we sing him to sleep many nights. I have a terrible singing voice so I feel bad for the poor kid but he just LOVES it. So we need to learn more songs. 'I am special' is getting old.

Celebrate today

Yay! Today is the one year anniversary of when we found out we were having a baby! Who would have known how much our lives would change. And how much more love we were capable of having. Nolan is the light of our lives. I love my life so much. I am a lucky woman.

When I got home last night from a sticky dinner at the Wood N Tap, I found this... Dave's clothes hanging on the railing.

Then I found this... my boys in their underclothes. Happy little clams

I am a lucky girl

A nice one

Finally a nice photo of Nolan and Mommy. Of course, I got my hair done that day so I looked (and felt) fabulous! That always helps in photos. What a big boy we have.

too cool

On Fathers Day we went to Stoneham and celebrated with the extended family- Nana, Grampa, Auntie, two Uncles and lots of Great Cousins. It was a lovely but HOT AND STICKY day. It was bright too, Nolan needed some shades so I offered him mine.

Happy Father's Day

Happy First Father's Day Sweetie! Every day I see you and Nolan together I can't believe my eyes. You both make each day sweeter and fuller than I ever could have imagined. You are an amazing dad and a truly beautiful husband. I am so lucky.

Coming out of the fog...

These past two weeks have been tough. I love that it's Friday again. After today I will have only one (a big one, but just one) thing to be trying to tackle/get through next week and that feels GREAT!

Nolan is getting big! His hobbies include drooling, eating, drooling, blowing drool bubbles, drooling, making faces at mommy and daddy, drooling and trying out his new toys. He doesn't seem to LOVE the seat, but it's fun to have him sit in it...

You may notice some drool in this photo...

it's been a busy few weeks, I'm sorry I haven't posted daily. Since those who look at this really just want a photo... here you go. More updates soon!...

Slept through the night...

Last night, Nolan slept through the night. Now this is a wonderful piece of news but sleep was not a home run. Dave gave him an A-, I gave him a B for his efforts. While he slept from 9:30-5:30, he also woke up 3 times between 7:30 and 9:30 and wailed for about 20-30 minutes each wake up.

In every book I read I take all advice with a grain of salt and then ponder if that advice fits with my parenting method. There is so much advice out there, even from well meaning friends and family, that just doesn't fit or work with either me, Dave or Nolan. I was reading a book about sleep and it mentioned that newborns (and apparently Nolan is still a newborn) should have no more than a 2 hour wakeful period and that a restorative nap is at least 45 minutes long. Well, taking that tidbit of information I paid close attention to Nolan's behavior and whaddya know? After about 1.5 hours he showed tired behavior. So I scooped him up and rocked him and he fell asleep- quickly and easily. Then I swaddled him and rocked him some more then placed him in his crib or Pack N Play and he slept.

So! Yesterday I read my book and showered during his first nap. I ate lunch and chopped and cooked some vegetables (on the stove!) then checked email etc during his second nap. And I did more email and blogged during his third nap yesterday. And while Nolan did not fall asleep (and stay asleep) well last night, this is a huge step in the right direction. YAY Nolan!

Our New House

So this is what our newly laid out house looks like. And I have to admit, it looks more different than I thought it would. The basement is great (Dave said that about 10 times this weekend). I agree. The living room we'll need to work on- the furniture looks funny in there. But it's fine for now. And it's nice to have the rocker in Nolan's room. Here are some photos... clearly Dave and Nolan like the basement- we had family naptime in the basement yesterday.

Nighttime- good. Daytime- not so

So Dave and I (and our pediatrician) have figured out a great routine for nighttime that helps little Nolan and Mom and Dad sleep well. While discussing our routine and Nolan's sleeping habits we discovered that we have harbored a terrible habit. During the day, Nolan sleeps really great... IN OUR ARMS. He is 3 months old and he still sleeps in our arms. But he sleeps great in our arms.

So today is the first day of Nolan's new life. And to be honest, I'm not sure he's going to like it very much for the first week or so. And probably not me either. But in an effort to get Nolan on a little bit of a napping routine and to get him to sleep in his crib during the day we've decided we're going to let him cry/ fuss it out. We'll create a routine and stick to it. He will catch on. Right?

This sucks. I'm hiding where I can hardly hear him but I can still hear him crying... Maybe I'll take a shower now.

UPDATE: I let him scream for 45 minutes and then gave up.

CEO of the Family

I am the CEO of this family. Full time. Friday I gave my notice that I'd be leaving the full time insurance gig for a better position. It doesn't pay as well unless you count the smiles, coos and poopy diapers but it's more important. So if I'm the CEO, then this little guy is the Chairman of the Board.

A new day

After a well deserved and necessary night out I am feeling better but still sleep deprived. I wish this happened more often but last night wasn't too bad- the problem was getting ME to fall asleep...

Wednesday, June 9, 2010

are you sleeping?

How can something this adorable make me feel so angry and inadequate? This little drool-monster has had Dave and I running in circles trying to figure out how to get back what we had- a happy baby who was falling asleep and staying asleep except for one wake up to eat. We even called the doctor- who offered really no advice. She did not recommend letting him cry himself to sleep, which we both were considering doing. She suggested doing mostly what we are doing. Except we are both extremely frustrated with that option and now sleep deprived. The trouble isn't always getting him to fall asleep but more so getting him to stay asleep through the transition from our arms to his bed. Or when removing the pacifier. When we place him down he wakes up. And doesn't fall back asleep.
We both agreed to do this new bedtime for a full week. It is day three, night two. He has been falling asleep in our arms ok, no longer wailing for an hour. However we need to work on getting him to sleep in the crib, which has averaged 2 wake ups making bedtime still longer than an hour but not wailing. Although he was up for 2.5 hours last night. why???
But seriously- how cute is he?

Highs and Lows

It is amazing what highs and lows a baby can bring to your life. This weekend was evidence of that. Happiness, frustration, laughter, fury- he is so cute and so maddening at the same time. Sorry for the weak posts this weekend. I was hoping to tell you all about how wonderful Nolan's new bed is. He got a pack and play as a transition bed from the bassinet to the crib. He's growing out of the little basket he sleeps in.

Except he won't sleep in it tonight. GRRR... so he's back in the bassinet. SIGH

I am so lucky

Tonight was one of those nights that I realized just how lucky I am that Dave is my husband. I am such a lucky girl

Guess who rolled over???

Yes, Nolan did. Three times and one half (of course the attempt I was recording). He was playing on his belly, oogling at himself in the mirror and suddenly it happened! I was very excited. He was confused.

Sleepy Heads

I'm not sure what 'counts' for sleeping but today Nolan and I got up for good at 10am. We had a heck of a night with a long wake up from 1:45-3:15 but then we did this after his 6:00-6:30 wake up. It was NICE.

thank you, honey, for this flattering photo! :)
